A 'Category' can be defined as a label or tag that can be applied to the posts you create for each individual activity completed as part of a Project or Assignment. Once applied, your posts are grouped together based on the category you select. By categorising your posts, you ensure that your learning log is easier for yourself, your tutor and fellow students to navigate if you choose to share your work.
When setting up a new learning log, categories are auto-generated based on the template you choose; the most common categories consist of the 10 Project and 10 Assignment template.
If you're looking for guidance on adding new categories to your learning log, for example, if you selected the wrong template and require additional Project / Assignment categories, see the How can I add a new category to my learning log? article for more information.
Adding a Category to a New Post
New posts can be assigned to categories from the 'Post' menu available to the right of the editing window:
1. Scroll down the 'Post' menu until you reach the 'Categories' heading, as shown in the screenshot below.
2. You will now see a list of the categories that are available on your learning log menu. To assign your post to a category, tick the box next to the relevant Project or Assignment.
3. When your post is complete and you have selected 'Publish' the post will be made available on your learning log and will appear assigned to the category you have selected.
4. To check whether your post displays under the chosen category, you can navigate to the homepage of your learning log (spaces.oca.ac.uk/yoursitenamehere) and select the relevant category from the left-hand menu. See the screenshot below for an example of the post used in this article.
Adding a Category to a Published Post
If you would like to assign a category to a post that is already published on your learning log, follow the step-by-step guide below:
1. Navigate to the WordPress Dashboard by viewing your learning log, hovering over the title of your site on the toolbar and selecting 'Dashboard', as shown in the screenshot below.
2. Select 'Posts' from the left-hand menu to view a list of all of the posts you have created, including any drafts.
3. To assign a category, you will first need to hover your cursor over the post you wish to edit to reveal additional options and either select 'Edit' to make changes from the editor, or 'Quick Edit' to view simple post options.
In each instance, you can now tick the box next to the relevant Project or Assignment beneath the 'Categories' section and 'Save' / 'Update' your changes to assign to your selected category.
